BugSmash: The best Marker.io alternative

Built for the client who signs off, not the developer who files the bug

Marker.io turns a report into a ticket with console logs and full technical context, which is exactly right for a QA engineer. BugSmash is built for the other person in the room: the client who opens a link, comments on the work and approves a version, across thirteen file types rather than websites alone.

BugSmash is the closest Marker.io alternative for agencies whose reviewers are clients rather than engineers.

Both capture pinned visual feedback on a live site with browser and device context, and both push it into a project tool. Marker.io is a bug reporting system built around two-way sync with Jira and Linear. BugSmash is a review and approval workspace that also covers video, audio, PDFs, mobile apps, 3D and CAD, with approval state and your own branding.

What is Marker.io?

Marker.io is a website bug reporting tool for development teams. A widget on the site, or a browser extension, captures a screenshot with console logs, network activity and full environment details, then creates an issue in Jira, Linear, GitHub, GitLab, Asana or Trello.

Its defining feature is two-way sync: when the issue is marked done in the project tool, the status flows back to whoever reported it. Plans include a fixed seat count and a limit on active websites.

PRIMARY USE CASES

  • QA and bug reporting during web development
  • Client-reported issues landing directly in Jira or Linear
  • Capturing technical context automatically with each report
  • Tracking issue status back to the reporter

Why agencies outgrow Marker.io

Marker.io is excellent at the job it was built for, and we say what that is further down. The problem is usually that an agency needs a different job done.

It is a bug tracker, and clients do not file bugs

Marker.io turns a report into a ticket with console logs, network activity and full technical context, then syncs it into Jira or Linear. That is the right shape for a QA engineer and the wrong shape for a client who wants to say the logo should be bigger and then approve the page.

There is no client-facing approval state, no branded review portal on your own domain, and no sense of a version being signed off. The workflow ends at a ticket rather than at a decision.

Five active websites, and seats from three

Starter at $39 a month includes three seats and five active websites, with additional seats billed at around $4 each up to fifteen. An agency with eight client sites in flight is already past the entry plan on projects alone.

No free plan, and the trial is capped at 25 issues

The trial runs fifteen days with full Team access and no credit card, which is generous, but it stops at twenty five issues. One busy round of feedback on one site will use most of that, and there is no free tier to fall back to.

Websites only

Marker.io reviews web pages. Video cuts, audio edits, PDFs, decks, mobile builds, 3D models and CAD drawings all happen somewhere else.

What does not change when you switch

The real worry about changing review tool is never whether the new one is better. It is whether your client will refuse to use it. Nothing you ask of your clients changes.

What you get that Marker.io does not have

A review that ends in an approval

The client clicks approve on a specific version, and the project moves from feedback to finished. That decision is recorded against the version they saw. A ticket being closed in Jira is not the same thing, and a client cannot see it.

A review space that carries your brand

Your logo on every link from $59, your own domain and your own email from $129, the review interface in the reviewer's language, and a welcome note or short video when they open it. Your client sees your studio, not a bug reporting tool.

Twelve more things you can put in front of them

Video and audio with timeline comments, PDFs, decks, Word documents, images, email builds, raw HTML, native mobile apps, 3D models and CAD drawings. Marker.io reviews web pages. One client sends you more than web pages.

A free plan, so you can put it in front of a real client this week

Two projects, unlimited guest reviewers, unlimited comments, no credit card and no issue cap.

When you should choose Marker.io

BugSmash is the better fit if

  • Your reviewers are clients and stakeholders, not engineers
  • You need a recorded approval on a version, not a closed ticket
  • Clients review video, audio, PDFs, decks, apps, 3D or CAD
  • You want the review to carry your studio's branding and domain
  • You want to trial it on a real client with no issue cap

Marker.io is the better fit if

  • Your reviewers are developers and QA testers
  • You need console logs and network activity attached to every report
  • Two-way status sync back from Jira or Linear matters
  • Your scope is websites and bug tracking

If your reviewers are your own QA team and developers, if you need console logs and network activity attached to every report, and if you want a ticket marked done in Jira to close the loop back to whoever reported it, Marker.io does that better than BugSmash does. The two-way sync in particular is something we do not currently match.

If the person on the other end of the link is a client rather than an engineer, keep reading.

Why are teams switching toBugSmash

Everything you didn't know you needed, until now.

Switching takes an afternoon, not a weekend

Marker.io issues already live in your project tool, which makes this easier than most switches. Your history is in Jira or Linear, not locked in the review tool.

  1. Start free and put your next new project in BugSmash. Do not move history. New work only.

  2. Send one client the link. No account for them means no email explaining a signup, which is the step that usually kills a tool change.

  3. Leave Marker.io running until your billing period ends. Finish the reviews already in flight over there.

  4. Remove the Marker.io widget from sites as you retire them. Worth doing deliberately rather than finding it later.

  5. Cancel once the last one closes. Nothing is stranded, because nothing moved.

Questions people ask before switching

What is the best Marker.io alternative?

It depends who your reviewers are. For engineering teams that want deep technical capture and two-way sync, BugHerd is the closest like-for-like. For agencies whose reviewers are clients and who need approval, branding and more than websites, BugSmash is the better fit.
